What Is a Christian?
Many people use the word “Christian” in different ways. Some think a Christian is simply a good person, a church member, or someone born into a religious family. But in the Bible, the word Christian is connected to discipleship, persuasion by the truth of Christ, and identification with Christ even in suffering.
A Christian is a disciple of Jesus Christ: someone who belongs to Christ, believes the gospel, receives salvation by grace through faith, and is not ashamed to be identified with the Lord. A Christian is not made by culture, family background, good works, or religious title. A true Christian follows Jesus Christ because he has been changed by the grace of God.

“And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.”
This is the first place where the word Christians appears in the Bible. The verse shows that Christians were disciples of Jesus Christ. They were taught the Word, gathered with the church, and were identified as followers of Christ.

No one becomes a Christian by family background. Each person must personally receive Christ and believe on His name. Faith cannot be inherited like a family name.
“I am a Christian because I go to church.”
Church attendance is important, but it does not make someone a Christian. In Acts 11:26, the people called Christians were disciples, not merely religious attenders.
“A Christian should be ashamed when the world rejects him.”
The Bible says that if any man suffer as a Christian, he should not be ashamed, but glorify God. A Christian’s identity is tied to Christ, not to the approval of the world.
What This Means for Us Today
If the Bible connects the name Christian with discipleship, then Christianity is not only a title. It is a life identified with Jesus Christ. A person should not rest in culture, family background, church attendance, or good works as proof of salvation.
A Christian is someone who has received Christ by faith and now belongs to Him. This does not mean the Christian is perfect, but it does mean the direction of life has changed. Christ becomes Lord, His Word becomes truth, and the gospel becomes the foundation of hope.
The question is not only, “Do I call myself Christian?” but, “Am I truly a disciple of Jesus Christ? Have I received Him by faith? Am I ashamed of Him, or do I belong to Him openly?”
