LIFE QUESTIONS

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

CHAPTER 3

12 BIBLICAL QUESTIONS ABOUT GUIDANCE, WISDOM, DECISIONS, AND GOD’S WILL

Life brings choices that can feel heavy: decisions about work, family, relationships, service, and the next step ahead. God may not reveal every detail of the future, but He has not left His people without direction. His Word gives truth, His wisdom shapes discernment, and His presence steadies every faithful step.

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”

PSALM 32:8 · KJV

01

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

WHY DO I NEED GOD’S DIRECTION?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

You need God’s direction because your own understanding is limited. A path can appear sensible, successful, or safe and still lead away from God’s truth and purpose.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
JEREMIAH 10:23 · KJV

“O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.”

PSALM 25:4–5 · KJV

“Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Proverbs warns that sincere confidence is not the same as being right. People naturally evaluate decisions through limited sight: what feels good, what seems practical, what others approve, or what promises immediate relief. Yet God sees the entire path and its end. Jeremiah does not deny that people make choices; he admits that we are not sufficient to direct our own lives apart from the Lord.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“I only need God’s direction for the biggest decisions in life.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

God’s wisdom is not reserved for emergencies. The Lord wants His Word to shape ordinary choices, motives, relationships, priorities, and daily conduct. Depending on God does not make a believer passive; it produces humble, careful, and obedient living.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Begin by admitting where your own understanding is limited. Ask God to expose any path you have chosen merely because it seemed right to you, and let His Word become the measure of your direction.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Where are you most tempted to trust your own judgment without first seeking what God has said?

02

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

CAN I KNOW GOD’S WILL?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

You can know the will of God that He has revealed in Scripture. God does not promise to show every future detail, but He clearly reveals how His people are to think, live, worship, and obey.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
1 THESSALONIANS 4:3 · KJV

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:”

JAMES 4:15 · KJV

“For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Romans 12 does not present God’s will as a hidden code that must be discovered through anxiety. It calls the believer to a renewed mind, no longer shaped by the world. As Scripture corrects and transforms our thinking, we become able to recognize what pleases God. The Bible directly reveals God’s will in many areas: holiness, honesty, love, purity, prayer, gratitude, service, and obedience.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“God’s will is one secret path, and one wrong move will ruin my whole life.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

God is not trying to trap His children. He calls them to walk in the light He has given. There may be decisions where more than one lawful choice can honor Him. In those moments, the believer should use biblical wisdom, seek godly counsel, act responsibly, and trust the Lord with what remains unknown.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Start with what God has already revealed. Do not wait for a special answer while ignoring clear commands in Scripture. Obedience in the known will of God prepares the heart for wise choices in matters that are less clear.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What part of God’s revealed will do you already know but need to obey more faithfully?

03

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

DOES GOD GUIDE ME THROUGH THE BIBLE?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Yes. God’s Word is the believer’s sure guide. It may not answer every question by naming a specific outcome, but it gives commands, principles, wisdom, and truth for every part of life.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
2 TIMOTHY 3:16–17 · KJV

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

JOSHUA 1:8 · KJV

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

A lamp gives light for the next step. Psalm 119 does not promise that God will reveal the whole road at once. It teaches that His Word gives enough light to walk faithfully now. Scripture teaches what is right, exposes what is wrong, corrects our thinking, and trains us in righteous living. Its direction is both personal and practical because it reshapes the heart that makes decisions.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“The Bible cannot guide me because my exact situation is not named in it.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Not every decision is named, but every decision should be measured by biblical truth. Scripture speaks to motives, character, priorities, relationships, stewardship, purity, honesty, wisdom, love, and the glory of God. A believer learns direction by asking not only, “What may I do?” but also, “What does God’s Word teach me to value and pursue?”

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Open the Bible before you make a major decision. Search for clear commands and principles that apply. Let Scripture correct the questions you are asking, not merely confirm the choice you already prefer.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What biblical truth should shape the decision you are currently facing?

04

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Ask God for wisdom. He invites believers who lack wisdom to come to Him in faith, trusting that He gives generously and does not shame those who ask.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
PROVERBS 2:6 · KJV

“For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”

PSALM 32:8 · KJV

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

James writes to believers facing trials. The need for wisdom is not merely intellectual; it is the need to respond to life in a way that honors God. Wisdom sees circumstances through God’s truth rather than through panic, pride, or impulse. God’s promise is not that He will instantly hand us a complete answer to every question, but that He gives the wisdom needed to walk faithfully through the trial.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“If I pray once, I should immediately know every detail of the right decision.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

God often gives wisdom through prayer, Scripture, careful thinking, godly counsel, experience, and time. Asking for wisdom is not a shortcut around responsibility. It is humble dependence on God while you study His Word, gather the needed facts, and consider what obedience requires.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Pray specifically for wisdom. Write down the decision, the biblical principles involved, and the responsibilities you must consider. Then move forward patiently rather than allowing uncertainty to produce paralysis.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Where do you need wisdom right now, and what responsibility must you still carry while waiting on God?

05

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

HOW DO I MAKE A WISE DECISION?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

A wise decision is shaped by God’s Word, careful thought, godly counsel, honest motives, and a desire to please the Lord rather than merely protect comfort or gain approval.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
PROVERBS 15:22 · KJV

“Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.”

PHILIPPIANS 1:9–10 · KJV

“And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

To walk circumspectly means to walk carefully, accurately, and with spiritual awareness. A wise decision is not simply whatever produces the quickest result. It considers whether the choice is biblical, whether it will help or harm others, whether it fits your responsibilities, and whether it can be made with a clear conscience before God. Wise counsel is valuable because it helps expose blind spots that personal desire may hide.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“A wise decision is the choice that makes life easiest.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Some wise decisions are difficult because obedience can cost time, comfort, money, reputation, or convenience. The question is not only what is easiest now, but what is most faithful in light of God’s truth. Wisdom chooses what is excellent, not merely what is acceptable.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Before deciding, ask: Is this choice consistent with Scripture? Are my motives clean? Have I considered counsel from believers who know God’s Word? Can I genuinely ask God to bless this decision?

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Which part of wise decision-making do you most often neglect: Scripture, counsel, motives, responsibility, or patience?

06

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

CAN MY FEELINGS LEAD ME?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Feelings are real, but they are not a reliable final authority. They can reveal what is happening in the heart, yet they must be tested and governed by the truth of God’s Word.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
JEREMIAH 17:9 · KJV

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

PSALM 119:105 · KJV

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Scripture does not tell us to deny emotions. Fear, sorrow, joy, desire, grief, and concern are part of human experience. The danger comes when feelings become the voice that makes the final decision. A feeling may be strong and still be wrong. A desire may be sincere and still be shaped by fear, pride, impatience, or selfishness.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“Because I feel peace about it, this must be God’s will.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Peace can be a blessing from God, but a feeling of peace alone cannot prove that a choice is biblical. A person can feel calm while ignoring Scripture, and another can feel unsettled while taking a difficult but faithful step. Feelings should be brought before God, examined honestly, and submitted to His Word.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Do not despise your feelings, but do not obey them blindly. Ask what they may be revealing, then measure your response by Scripture, wisdom, and godly counsel.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Which feeling has been influencing your choices most strongly, and what truth from God’s Word should examine it?

07

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN A DOOR IS FROM GOD?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

An open opportunity can be from God, but circumstances alone do not determine His will. Every door must be tested by Scripture, wisdom, motives, and the responsibilities God has already given you.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
COLOSSIANS 4:3 · KJV

“Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ.”

PROVERBS 3:5–6 · KJV

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Paul recognized a great and effective door for ministry in Ephesus, but he also said there were many adversaries. An open door did not mean an easy path. It meant there was an opportunity to serve Christ faithfully. The Bible never tells us to interpret every pleasant circumstance as God’s approval or every difficult circumstance as a closed door.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“If the opportunity becomes difficult, it cannot be from God.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Difficulty can reveal that an opportunity is unwise, but it can also be part of faithful obedience. The decisive question is not whether the door feels easy. Ask whether the opportunity agrees with God’s Word, helps you fulfill your present responsibilities, and can be pursued with a clear conscience and a desire to glorify Christ.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Do not let circumstances alone decide for you. Bring the opportunity before God, measure it by Scripture, seek wise counsel, and consider both the fruit and the responsibilities involved.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Is there an opportunity before you that you have judged only by ease, comfort, fear, or outward appearance?

08

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

WHAT IF TWO CHOICES SEEM GOOD?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

When two choices are both lawful and honorable, you may not need a mystical answer. You need wisdom to choose the path that best fits biblical priorities, present responsibilities, and the glory of God.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
1 CORINTHIANS 10:31 · KJV

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”

JAMES 3:17 · KJV

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Paul prays that believers would have knowledge and judgment in order to approve what is excellent. The goal is not only to avoid obvious sin, but to discern what is most fitting and fruitful. Sometimes both choices may be good, yet one may better serve your family, your local church, your testimony, your stewardship, or your spiritual growth.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“There must be one perfect answer hidden from me, and I must fearfully wait until I find it.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

When Scripture does not forbid either path, the believer is free to make a responsible choice with wisdom and gratitude. This freedom is not independence from God. It is the mature use of the wisdom, counsel, abilities, and responsibilities He has provided.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Compare the choices honestly. Ask which one better supports faithfulness to God, love for others, wise stewardship, and the responsibilities already placed in your care. Then choose without treating wise action as rebellion.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Are you waiting for certainty where God may be calling you to exercise biblical wisdom and responsible freedom?

09

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

SHOULD I WAIT FOR A SIGN?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

You should not build your guidance on private signs, coincidences, or tests you create for God. He has given His sure Word, and He calls you to walk by faith and wisdom rather than superstition.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
MATTHEW 4:7 · KJV

“Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”

PSALM 119:105 · KJV

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Peter points believers to the sure word of prophecy as a light in a dark place. God did give signs at particular moments in biblical history, but believers are never commanded to create personal tests for God before obeying Scripture. Direction through the Word is steadier than interpreting a feeling, a dream, a random event, or a coincidence.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“Gideon used a fleece, so I should create signs whenever I need a decision.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Gideon’s fleece took place in a unique historical setting after God had already spoken directly to him. It is a record of what happened, not a command for every believer’s decision-making. The normal path of guidance is Scripture, prayer, wisdom, counsel, responsibility, and faith-filled obedience.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Stop demanding signs where God has already given clear principles. Ask instead: What has God said? What wisdom is needed? What choice can I make in faith with a clear conscience before Him?

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Have you been waiting for a sign when Scripture and wise counsel have already made your next faithful step clear?

10

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

WHAT IF I MADE THE WRONG DECISION?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

A wrong decision does not place you beyond God’s mercy, correction, or care. When you have sinned, repent honestly. When you have acted with limited understanding, learn, seek wisdom, and keep walking faithfully with the Lord.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
PSALM 37:23–24 · KJV

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.”

1 JOHN 1:9 · KJV

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Proverbs recognizes human planning while affirming God’s rule over every step. This truth does not excuse sinful choices, but it gives hope to believers who realize they have made mistakes. God is able to correct, redirect, teach, restore, and use even painful failures to produce humility and wisdom in those who turn back to Him.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“Because I made a wrong decision, God’s purpose for my life is finished.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

God’s grace is not permission to be careless, but neither is one failure the end of faithful usefulness. When sin is involved, confession and repentance are necessary. When the choice was not sinful but unwise, humility and correction are needed. In either case, the next step is not despair; it is truthful obedience before God.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Face the decision honestly. Confess sin where needed, make restitution where possible, receive wise counsel, and do the next right thing. Do not keep living in yesterday’s failure when God is calling you to obey Him today.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Is there a past decision you need to bring honestly before God instead of allowing shame or regret to control your present walk?

11

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

HOW DOES PRAYER HELP ME FIND DIRECTION?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Prayer brings your decisions before God, asks for wisdom, aligns your desires with His will, and teaches you to depend on Him rather than treating direction as something you can control alone.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
PSALM 143:8 · KJV

“Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.”

JAMES 1:5 · KJV

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Paul prayed that believers would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Prayer does not replace Scripture or careful thinking. It puts the entire decision under God’s authority. In prayer, we ask Him to purify motives, give wisdom, open or close opportunities according to His will, and make us willing to obey even when His direction is not what we expected.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“Prayer is only for asking God to approve the decision I already want.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Prayer is not a way to make God agree with us. It is a way to bring our hearts under His rule. A faithful prayer asks for direction, but it also asks for submission: “Lord, teach me what is right, correct what is wrong in me, and make me willing to follow You.”

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Pray before, during, and after decisions. Ask God for wisdom, truthful motives, willingness to obey, and peace that comes from trusting Him—not merely from getting the result you prefer.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

How would your prayers change if you asked God not only to show you a path, but also to make you willing to obey it?

12

WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION

HOW DO I KEEP WALKING WHEN THE WAY IS UNCLEAR?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Keep walking faithfully in the light God has already given. You may not see the entire road, but the Lord directs the steps of those who continue to trust, obey, and depend on Him.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
PSALM 119:105 · KJV

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

PROVERBS 4:18 · KJV

“But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Psalm 37 does not promise a life without uncertainty or stumbling. It promises that the Lord upholds His people. God’s direction is often clearer in hindsight than it is in the moment. He gives light for the next faithful step, then more light as we continue walking. The believer’s duty is not to control the entire future; it is to remain obedient in the present.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“I should do nothing until I can see the whole path with complete certainty.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Waiting is sometimes wise, but fear can disguise itself as waiting. When God has already given a clear next step, delay may become disobedience. Walk in the truth you know: pray, obey Scripture, fulfill today’s responsibilities, seek counsel, and leave tomorrow with the Lord.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Choose the next obedient step you can clearly see. Take it in faith, without demanding the entire future. God’s guidance is not only a destination; it is the steady work of learning to trust Him as you walk.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What next faithful step has God already put before you, even though the rest of the path is still unclear?
