WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

CHAPTER 5

12 BIBLICAL QUESTIONS ABOUT GOD’S PRESENCE, PRAYER, WAITING, TRUST, AND FAITH

There are seasons when prayer seems difficult, the Bible feels quiet, and God feels far away. Yet a changing feeling does not change God’s character or His promises. Scripture teaches us to seek Him honestly, trust His Word, wait faithfully, and keep walking even when His nearness is not felt.

“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.”

PSALM 145:18 · KJV

01

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

WHY DOES GOD FEEL DISTANT?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

God may feel distant during suffering, waiting, sorrow, spiritual dryness, or unconfessed sin. But a feeling of distance is not proof that God has changed, forgotten you, or abandoned His promise.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
PSALM 42:5 · KJV

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.”

ISAIAH 55:8–9 · KJV

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Psalm 13 records a real cry of faith from David. He felt forgotten, yet he did not turn away from God. He brought his question directly to the Lord. This teaches us that honest spiritual dryness is not the same as unbelief. Sometimes we do not understand what God is doing, but we can still speak to Him, remember His past faithfulness, and continue to trust His character.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“Because God feels far away, He must have left me.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Feelings can be affected by grief, exhaustion, fear, disappointment, temptation, or circumstances. God does not become less faithful when your heart feels weak. Psalm 13 begins with anguish, but it ends with trust in God’s mercy. The path forward is not pretending that the pain is absent; it is bringing the pain honestly before God.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Tell God the truth about how you feel, but do not let feelings become the final authority. Hold them beside God’s Word and choose to trust what He has promised.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What situation has made God feel distant to you, and have you brought that feeling honestly before Him?

02

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

DOES FEELING FAR FROM GOD MEAN HE HAS LEFT ME?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

No. For those who belong to Christ, God’s promise is not based on emotional strength or perfect circumstances. He remains faithful even when His presence is not strongly felt.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
MATTHEW 28:20 · KJV

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

DEUTERONOMY 31:8 · KJV

“And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Hebrews 13 gives a promise of God’s continuing presence in the middle of practical concerns about contentment and daily life. God does not promise that life will always feel easy, but He promises that His people are not left alone. Jesus also assured His disciples that He would be with them as they carried out His work in the world.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“God is near only when I feel spiritually strong.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

God’s nearness is not measured by the intensity of your emotions. There are times of joy when His presence seems vivid and times of weakness when faith must rest on His Word. In both seasons, God remains the same. The believer’s confidence is not in changing feelings but in the unchanging faithfulness of God.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Repeat God’s promises when your heart feels uncertain. Let Scripture answer the fear that says you have been abandoned.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Which promise of God do you need to believe when your feelings say that you are alone?

03

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

CAN SIN AFFECT MY FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Yes. Sin does not make God unaware of you, but unconfessed sin disrupts fellowship with Him. It hardens the heart, weakens prayer, and keeps a believer from walking openly in the light.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
ISAIAH 59:2 · KJV

“But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”

1 JOHN 1:6–7 · KJV

“If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Psalm 66 does not teach that God lacks knowledge of a person’s prayer. He knows every word and every heart. The issue is regarding or cherishing iniquity: knowingly holding onto sin without repentance. God calls His people to truth. Fellowship with Him cannot be healthy while we protect what He calls evil.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“If I have sinned, I should stay away from God until I feel worthy again.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Sin should not drive you away from God in hiding. It should drive you toward Him in confession and repentance. The answer is not to cover sin but to bring it into the light. Christ’s blood is sufficient to cleanse, and God’s call is to return honestly rather than remain distant by choice.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Ask God to search your heart. Where He exposes sin, confess it plainly and turn from it. Do not let hidden sin become a wall you keep building between your heart and God.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Is there an area of known sin you have been protecting instead of bringing honestly before God?

04

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

WHAT DO I DO WHEN I CANNOT FEEL GOD?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

When you cannot feel God, continue to trust Him and obey what He has already revealed. Faith does not wait for perfect emotion before it chooses to worship, pray, and walk in truth.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
2 CORINTHIANS 5:7 · KJV

“For we walk by faith, not by sight:”

PSALM 119:105 · KJV

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Habakkuk describes severe loss and uncertainty, yet he chooses to rejoice in God Himself. His faith is not based on a pleasant outcome. It rests in the God of salvation. There are seasons when emotion is weak, but God’s truth remains strong. Walking by faith means continuing to follow His Word when you cannot see or feel the entire path.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“If worship feels dry, prayer feels difficult, or the Bible feels quiet, there is no value in continuing.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Faithfulness is often most meaningful when it costs something. Continue opening the Bible, continue praying, continue gathering with God’s people, and continue obeying the next clear command. God may use these steady acts of faith to strengthen you long before your emotions begin to change.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Choose one clear act of faith today: pray honestly, read a Psalm, worship with Scripture, or obey a command you already understand. Do not wait for a feeling before you walk with God.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What faithful step have you been delaying because you have been waiting to feel closer to God first?

05

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

DOES GOD HEAR ME WHEN I PRAY?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Yes. God hears the prayers of His people according to His will. He is not distant from their needs, though His answer may not always come in the time, form, or result they expected.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
PSALM 34:17 · KJV

“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.”

1 PETER 3:12 · KJV

“For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

First John gives confidence in prayer, but it also teaches that prayer is according to God’s will. Prayer is not a method for forcing God to give whatever we demand. It is coming to the Father through Christ, trusting His wisdom, asking for what is good, and submitting our desires to His perfect knowledge.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“If God has not answered in the way I wanted, He must not have heard me.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

God’s silence is not proof of His absence. Sometimes His answer is yes, sometimes no, sometimes wait, and sometimes He gives a different answer that better serves His purpose. Faith grows as we learn to ask boldly while still trusting the wisdom of the One who sees more than we do.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Keep praying. Bring your needs, fears, and desires before God. Ask Him to shape your request according to His Word and give you trust while you wait.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Have you interpreted an unanswered prayer as proof that God did not hear, rather than bringing that disappointment back to Him in faith?

06

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

WHAT DO I DO WHEN GOD SEEMS SILENT?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

When God seems silent, wait on Him with courage. Continue seeking His revealed Word, continue praying, and continue obeying the light you have rather than demanding immediate answers to every question.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
LAMENTATIONS 3:25–26 · KJV

“The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.”

PSALM 119:130 · KJV

“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Waiting on God is not doing nothing. Psalm 27 calls for courage while waiting. Lamentations speaks of hope and seeking. God has already spoken clearly through Scripture, so a season without a specific answer is not a season without guidance. We are called to remain faithful in what He has already made known while trusting Him for what remains unclear.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“If God is silent about my question, I have no reason to keep walking.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

God’s silence about a particular outcome does not cancel His written truth. Continue to obey what you know: love God, love others, flee sin, pray, work honestly, serve faithfully, and trust Christ. Waiting becomes spiritually fruitful when it teaches us to depend on God rather than trying to control every answer.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Write down what God has already made clear in Scripture. Obey those truths today, and ask Him to strengthen your heart while you wait for further direction.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What clear truth from God’s Word have you neglected while waiting for Him to answer another question?

07

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

CAN I TRUST GOD IN A DRY SEASON?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Yes. A dry season may expose weakness, deepen hunger for God, and teach a believer to seek Him for who He is rather than only for the comfort He gives.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
ISAIAH 43:2 · KJV

“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

HOSEA 6:3 · KJV

“Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

David wrote Psalm 63 in the wilderness. His environment was dry, but his deepest thirst was for God Himself. A dry spiritual season does not mean that seeking is pointless. It can become a season where a believer learns to pursue God with greater honesty, dependence, and desire rather than relying only on familiar feelings.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“A dry season proves that my faith is false or that God is finished with me.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Dry seasons can come to faithful believers. They may reveal areas that need repentance, but they may also be part of God’s work of teaching deeper trust. The answer is not to abandon the means of grace. Keep seeking God in Scripture, prayer, obedience, and fellowship with His people.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Seek God deliberately this week. Choose a Psalm to pray, read Scripture slowly, and ask Him to make your desire for Him deeper than your desire for immediate relief.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What would it look like to seek God Himself, not merely the feelings or answers you want from Him?

08

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

WHY DOES GOD MAKE ME WAIT?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

God often uses waiting to strengthen trust, expose self-reliance, shape character, and prepare His people for what they cannot yet see. Waiting is not wasted when it is placed in the hands of God.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
ROMANS 5:3–4 · KJV

“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope:”

PSALM 27:14 · KJV

“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Isaiah 40 is spoken to people who were weary and tempted to think that God had forgotten their way. The chapter reminds them that the everlasting God does not faint or grow weary. Waiting on Him is not passive resignation. It is hopeful dependence on the God whose understanding is infinite and whose strength is enough for weak people.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“Waiting means God is doing nothing.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

God may be working in ways that are hidden from you: strengthening patience, clarifying motives, preventing harm, opening a better path, or preparing you to carry a future answer wisely. The Bible does not promise that we will always know the reason for delay, but it calls us to trust the One who sees the whole path.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Do not spend the waiting season only asking, “When?” Also ask, “What is God teaching me to trust, obey, or become while I wait?”

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What area of waiting has tempted you to doubt God’s goodness or try to force your own answer?

09

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

HOW DO I SEEK GOD AGAIN?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Seek God by drawing near through Christ, turning from known sin, opening His Word, praying honestly, and choosing obedience instead of waiting for a perfect emotional moment.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
PSALM 119:10 · KJV

“With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.”

HEBREWS 4:16 · KJV

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

James speaks to people whose hearts were divided. Drawing near to God includes humility, repentance, and wholehearted dependence. This is not a promise that you can control God with religious effort. It is an invitation to come to Him honestly. Because Christ is our High Priest, believers can come boldly to the throne of grace for mercy and help.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“I need to fix myself first before I can come close to God.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

You come to God because you need His mercy and grace, not because you have already become strong enough. Seeking God does include turning from sin, but that turning is not self-salvation. It is the response of a needy heart that comes to the One who can cleanse, restore, and help.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Set aside a regular time this week to seek God in Scripture and prayer. Begin with honesty, confession where needed, and a simple willingness to obey what He shows you.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What practical habit could help you seek God with greater honesty and consistency this week?

10

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

WHAT IF I DOUBT GOD’S NEARNESS?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Bring your doubt honestly to Christ. Doubt should not be hidden as though God cannot handle it. He calls us to bring weak faith to Him and to let His truth correct what fear and uncertainty are saying.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
PSALM 73:23–24 · KJV

“Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.”

ROMANS 8:38–39 · KJV

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

The father in Mark 9 did not pretend that his faith was perfect. He came honestly to Jesus and asked for help. That is a biblical pattern for doubt: bring it to Christ rather than allowing it to grow in secrecy. Psalm 73 shows that even when the heart struggles, God holds His people and guides them with counsel.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“If I have doubts, I must not have any real faith.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Faith is not the absence of every question or every battle of the mind. Faith brings those questions to Christ and chooses to trust His Word. Doubt becomes dangerous when it refuses truth and turns away from Him. But weak faith that comes honestly to Jesus is met by grace and help.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Name your doubt before God. Then answer it with Scripture. Do not let your thoughts remain alone and untested when God has given you promises that speak directly to fear.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What doubt about God’s nearness do you need to bring openly to Christ instead of allowing it to remain hidden?

11

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

HOW DOES GOD DRAW ME NEAR?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

God draws people near through Jesus Christ. By His grace, His Word, His Spirit, prayer, and fellowship with believers, He gives mercy and help to those who come to Him.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
HEBREWS 4:16 · KJV

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

PSALM 145:18 · KJV

“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Ephesians 2 explains that those once far off are made near through the blood of Christ. Nearness to God is first a gospel truth before it is an emotional experience. We do not create our own access to God. Christ has opened the way. Because of Him, believers may come to the throne of grace for mercy and help in every time of need.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“I must create a special spiritual feeling before I can be close to God.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

God’s nearness is rooted in Christ, not in emotional performance. Feelings may rise and fall, but access to God through Jesus remains. As you use the means God gives—His Word, prayer, obedience, and fellowship—your heart is steadily trained to rest in what is true.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Come to God through Christ today. Ask for mercy and grace, open His Word, and thank Him that your access to Him rests on the blood of Christ rather than your changing feelings.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

How does knowing that Christ has made you near to God change the way you approach Him in a dry season?

12

WHEN GOD FEELS DISTANT

HOW DO I KEEP WALKING WHEN I CANNOT SEE OR FEEL HIM?

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER

Keep walking by faith. Trust God’s Word, obey the next clear step, remain connected to God’s people, and rest in the truth that Christ is faithful even when the path ahead feels dark.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
SUPPORTING PASSAGES
HEBREWS 11:6 · KJV

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

PSALM 119:105 · KJV

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

Second Corinthians 5 places this statement in the context of hope beyond what is seen. The believer does not live only by what appears immediately visible. Faith rests on the promises of God and looks toward what He has said is true. A lamp gives enough light for the next step, not always the entire road. God often guides His people in that same way.

A COMMON MISUNDERSTANDING

“I need complete clarity and strong feelings before I can faithfully move forward.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Faith is not blind optimism. It is trusting the God who has spoken. You may not have every answer, but you can still obey what He has revealed. Keep walking in the light of Scripture, keep praying, keep serving, and keep trusting the Lord who has promised never to leave His people.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Choose the next faithful step you can clearly see. Take it without demanding the whole future, and entrust the unseen parts of the road to God.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

What next step of obedience can you take today, even though you cannot yet see or feel the full answer?
