BELIEFS EXAMINED

DOES RELIGIOUS SINCERITY MAKE A PERSON RIGHT WITH GOD?

KEY TRUTH

Religious sincerity does not make a person right with God. A person can be earnest, disciplined, sacrificial, and deeply convinced while still believing what is false. Sin is not removed by sincerity. Righteousness is received through faith in Jesus Christ.

PRIMARY PASSAGE
POPULAR BELIEF

“It does not matter what religion a person follows as long as he is sincere.”

BIBLICAL CLARIFICATION

Romans 10 describes people who possessed real religious zeal. Their problem was not a lack of seriousness. Their zeal was not according to knowledge, and they attempted to establish their own righteousness instead of submitting to the righteousness of God.

Sincerity measures how strongly a person believes something. It does not determine whether the belief is true.

THEIR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS
GOOD INTENTIONS CAN BE WRONG

People can act sincerely and still act against God. Before his conversion, Paul honestly believed that opposing the name of Jesus was the right thing to do. His conviction did not make his action righteous.

I VERILY THOUGHT
A WAY THAT SEEMETH RIGHT

A path may feel reasonable, moral, spiritual, or traditional and still lead away from God. Human judgment cannot be the final authority because the heart can be deceived and human understanding is limited.

THE END THEREOF
CORNELIUS WAS SINCERE

Cornelius was devout, feared God, gave generously, and prayed continually. Yet God sent Peter to preach the gospel to him. His sincerity and religious devotion did not make the gospel unnecessary.

WORDS WHEREBY THOU SHALT BE SAVED
WHY SINCERITY CANNOT SAVE

Sincerity cannot solve the sinner’s real problem:

01 · SIN REMAINS

Strong feelings cannot remove guilt before a holy God.

02 · ERROR REMAINS ERROR

Believing a falsehood sincerely does not transform it into truth.

03 · HUMAN RIGHTEOUSNESS FALLS SHORT

Religious effort cannot equal the righteousness God requires.

04 · CHRIST CANNOT BE REPLACED

No religion, ritual, teacher, or moral system can do what Christ accomplished.

JESUS DID NOT PRESENT MANY WAYS

Jesus did not teach that every sincere path eventually reaches the Father. He identified Himself as the way, the truth, and the life. This claim is exclusive because the problem of sin has only one sufficient remedy.

NO MAN COMETH UNTO THE FATHER
NOT A QUESTION OF SUPERIOR PEOPLE

The gospel does not teach that Christians are saved because they are more sincere, intelligent, or moral than others.

SALVATION IS BY GRACE

Every sinner needs mercy. Biblical Christianity does not announce that good religious people earn heaven. It announces that guilty sinners can be saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

NOT OF WORKS
TRUTH MATTERS BECAUSE CHRIST MATTERS

Doctrine is not a cold substitute for love. Truth identifies the real Christ and the real gospel. A sincere person who trusts a false christ, a false sacrifice, or a false way of salvation is trusting something that cannot save.

NONE OTHER NAME
HOW SHOULD WE SPEAK TO SINCERE PEOPLE?

We should not mock them or assume that sincerity is worthless. Sincerity may reveal that a person is earnestly searching. But love does not leave someone confidently traveling in the wrong direction. Biblical love speaks the truth with humility and points people to Christ.

BIBLICALIST POINTS

What does Scripture teach about religious sincerity?

01

Zeal can exist without biblical knowledge.

02

Good intentions do not make false belief true.

03

Religious devotion cannot remove sin.

04

Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father.

05

Salvation is by grace through faith, not by religious merit.

NOW WHAT?

Do not measure your standing with God by how deeply you feel, how faithfully you practice religion, or how sincere your intentions are. Submit your beliefs to Scripture. Turn from confidence in your own righteousness and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
