BELIEFS EXAMINED
WHERE DO DINOSAURS FITIN THE BIBLE?
Dinosaurs were real animals within God’s creation. Scripture does not use the modern word dinosaur or provide a scientific catalog of prehistoric life. Behemoth and leviathan may preserve imagery of powerful creatures, but their precise identification is debated. Christians should affirm God as Creator while avoiding claims that the biblical text or fossil evidence does not clearly establish.
“Dinosaurs disprove the Bible because Genesis never mentions them, or alternatively, Job’s behemoth and leviathan unquestionably prove that humans lived with every dinosaur.”
The term was coined in the nineteenth century. Its absence from ancient Scripture is no more surprising than the absence of modern biological labels for many animals.
The Bible commonly uses ordinary categories suited to its original audience rather than later scientific taxonomy.
Dinosaur fossils reveal diverse animals that lived and died in the past. Christians should not dismiss physical evidence or accuse researchers of inventing entire fields.
Interpretation of geological history involves models, dates, environments, and assumptions that deserve careful study rather than slogans.
Job describes creatures beyond human control to humble Job before God’s wisdom. Proposals for behemoth include hippopotamus, a dinosaur-like animal, or heightened poetic description; leviathan has been linked to crocodile, sea creature, mythic imagery, or a combination.
The text clearly magnifies God’s power. It does not identify a species with enough precision for certainty.
Young-earth creationists place dinosaurs within a recent creation and often connect major fossils to the flood. Old-earth creationists and evolutionary creationists understand Genesis and geological time differently while affirming God as Creator.
These disagreements involve interpretation of Scripture and nature. They should be argued carefully without making one scientific model the condition of salvation.
Genesis declares that God alone creates, creation is ordered and good, humans bear His image, sin brings death and alienation, and history moves under divine purpose.
It should be read accurately as Scripture, not forced to answer every modern question it did not address.
Scripture describes a world subject to death, catastrophe, human dominion, and groaning. Animal extinction is not a challenge to God’s existence merely because the Bible does not narrate each species’ end.
The Creator’s care for animals and the future renewal of creation should shape responsible stewardship today.
Claims about human and dinosaur tracks, living dinosaurs, fossil dating, or ancient art should be checked through reliable evidence. Sensational material can damage witness when exposed as weak.
Science cannot decide whether God exists by method alone, and Scripture should not be defended through claims it never makes.
What can Christians affirm about dinosaurs?
Dinosaurs are part of the real created order.
The modern term need not appear in ancient Scripture.
Fossils should be examined rather than dismissed.
Behemoth and leviathan cannot be identified with complete certainty.
Christians hold several views of earth history.
Genesis gives foundational theology rather than a species catalog.
Weak sensational claims should not be used to defend Scripture.
Enjoy learning about dinosaurs as part of God’s world. Read Genesis and Job in context, investigate scientific claims from qualified sources, and distinguish clear doctrine from disputed models. Do not tell children that faith requires pretending fossils are false, and do not tell them science has disproved the Creator when that conclusion exceeds scientific method.
1. Why is the absence of the word dinosaur unsurprising?
2. What is the clear purpose of behemoth and leviathan in Job?
3. Which views of earth history exist among Christians?
4. What theological truths does Genesis establish?
5. Why should sensational fossil claims be tested?
