Suffering is one of the hardest realities of life — and one of the greatest questions people ask about God. If God is loving, good, and all-powerful, why does He allow pain?
The Bible does not avoid this question. Instead, it answers it with clarity, honesty, and hope.
Here are five Biblical truths that explain why suffering exists — and how God uses it for His purpose.
1. Suffering exists because sin broke creation
When Adam and Eve sinned, the world changed forever.
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin…”
— Romans 5:12 (KJV)
We live in a world that is:
This means suffering is not God’s original design — it is the result of sin, not the result of God being cruel.
2. Suffering reveals what is truly inside us
Trials expose the condition of our heart.
“The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.”
— Proverbs 17:3 (KJV)
Pressure reveals:
God allows fire not to destroy us — but to purify us.
3. Suffering draws us closer to God
Many people never pray until life hurts. Pain awakens our spirit.
“Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.”
— Psalm 119:67 (KJV)
Sometimes God removes comfort so He can remove our idols.
Suffering teaches us:
4. Suffering prepares us for eternal glory
Pain in this life is temporary — glory is eternal.
“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:17 (KJV)
Every tear you cried will be outweighed by eternal joy.
5. God uses suffering to accomplish His purposes
When Joseph was betrayed, he didn’t understand it — but God was working a greater plan.
“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good…”
— Genesis 50:20 (KJV)
Sometimes:
God never wastes suffering.
When He allows pain, He also allows purpose.
The Final Answer: God allows suffering because He can turn it into something greater.
He sees the full story — we see only one page.
Pain is temporary.
Glory is eternal.
God is faithful.
Let this be your prayer today:
“Lord, help me trust Your purpose even when I do not understand Your plan.”
