CAN GOOD WORKS SAVE ME?

Good works are not the way a sinner earns salvation. A person cannot work away sin, pay for his own guilt, or become righteous before God through religion, morality, kindness, baptism, church attendance, or personal effort.

Salvation is not earned. It is received. God saves sinners by His grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

God’s law shows us what sin is. It exposes our guilt. But the law was never given as a ladder by which sinners can climb their way to heaven. It reveals our need for a Savior.

Even the best things a person can offer God are not enough to remove sin. The problem is not only that we have failed to do enough good. The problem is that we are sinners in need of forgiveness and cleansing.

Salvation comes from God’s mercy, not from our record of good deeds. God does not save us because we deserve it. He saves us because Christ paid the price for sin.

To be justified means to be declared righteous before God. This does not happen because a person has done enough good. It happens through faith in Jesus Christ.

God justifies the ungodly who believe on Him. This does not mean a believer continues carelessly in sin. It means salvation begins with trusting Christ, not trusting yourself.

Grace means undeserved favor. Once salvation is treated as something earned by human works, it is no longer grace. The gospel is good news because Christ did what sinners could never do for themselves.

Good works matter, but they come after salvation. They are the fruit of a life that God has changed, not the price paid to receive eternal life.

Notice the order: we are saved by grace through faith, then created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Works do not save us, but a saved life should grow in obedience to God.
